Archive > Chris Staring, 548 Days on the Road

Exhibition Event 26 June, 6pm – 9pm. Exhibition runs from 26pm June – 3pm 9 July 2015.

'548 Days on the road' is Melbourne based photographer, Chris Staring's first photography exhibition.

The photography in this collection spawned from more than 50,000 surplus photos from Chris’s project 365 which he completed while on his recent worldwide travels. The aim of this Project 365 was to document the first 365 days of his journey with a single photo, blog post and location each day for an entire year.

A desire to complete this project 365 was the catalyst for his 548 days on the road before finally returning home to Melbourne. Spanning over 45 countries, this journey now also comes to life through the surrounding canvases and their accompanying stories. These photographs have been chosen for their aesthetic appeal as well as Chris’s nostalgic tie to the places and people depicted in them. The stories and thoughts which accompany the photographs are adaptions of the original posts from Chris's project 365. These serve to compliment the photographs and complete the entire picture where the photograph alone cannot speak more than 1000 words.

With a mid-range DSLR, GorillaPod and a few lenses in his backpack, Chris was determined to explore, photograph and write about the many oddities he encountered throughout Europe, Asia, Russia, and the Americas.

His photographs were soon discovered by the oddity travel website 'Atlas Obscura' (for whom he freelanced as a photojournalist) as well as receiving promotion from National Geographic and the Couchsurfing network throughout his journey.

Chris’s philosophy is to go in search of people and places in their natural state, and to bring life to the ordinary through his lens. Free of artificial light, posing and staging, he hopes that this collection of photography will inspire others to travel and explore the lesser known places around the world.
