Archive > Emily Veale, Contemporaries

4-17 July 2014

Emily Veale is an artist working in Melbourne in almost total isolation. After completing her Bachelor degree at the Australian Academy of Design, she was thrust into the real world with little sense of community and almost none of the shared feedback and growth experienced in a structured educational setting. Out of this, Contemporaries was born. A series of portraits romanticizing the works of 19th century artists who sat in parlours and drawing rooms with their fellow creatives and simply drew them- not to create a masterpiece, but instead to form a snapshot of a moment where thoughts were shared and ideas communicated. Creating art can be a lonely process, but in the mind of this artist, there is much to be gained from sharing and growing ideas together, if we do not wish to stagnate
