Archive > jay Dee: Welcome We’re Closed

Jay Dee is an Australian artist based in Melbourne. His paintings often explore the motifs of human identity and the increasing sense of isolation in contemporary society.

A mixture of surreal portrayals of ordinary life and a tinge of provocative humor are frequently present in the constructions of his imagined worlds.

Each work carries its own anecdote as well as criticism of the banality of everyday consumption. The inevitable feeling of loss and alienation usually derive from our estranged dreams and conflicting desires in the mass media culture. Jay continues to reflect on these recurring themes throughout his practice.

His latest solo exhibition Welcome We're Closed juxtaposes simple but contradictory ideas and moments, interwoven together in a puzzle-like manner, to capture the monotony of our daily routines with humorous depictions of their symbolic significances.
