Opening Event on 28 November from 6pm - 9pm

Exhibition runs from 6pm, 28 November - 3pm, 11 December 2014

My work takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues. My work tends to focus on my experiences and my country Afghanistan, the people there, poverty, society and culture. This whole year I have been focusing on my memories of war and cultural experiences from where I was born; that is Afghanistan. I have been seeking to express myself through painting to get this sense of inner turmoil out from within me. All my works depict scenes of conflict and horror, relating to the memories that have accumulated in the duration of my childhood and Hazara people in Afghanistan. The paintings are from video that I have made, also the sculptures, I used masking tapes and other types of tapes to put on my body all around and I was trying to capture the emotional and tension on my body, as a way of linking the materials to the subject matter. To me this is a way of not just presenting the subject matter in a visceral manner, but is also a way for the painting to ‘speak’ to me, as I become physically and mentally involved with the painting process. After completing this paintings and the sculptures, I experience a sense of peace and calmness, as the painting has become the embodied form of the emotions that once were inside me.
