Archive > The Mermaid Song, Simon Wilde

Steel, paper, wire, hardware, detritus, petrol, poison, acid, fire, bleach, rust, industrial cleaners, scourers and chemicals. Grinding, burning, hammering. Not the typical ingredients of a painting. That's why this work is so unique. Through a muscular process of experimentation Wilde has created a singular body of work, of which these pieces represent an intriguing sample. The work is abstract with no quarter given to representation although there is a salute to the blues of the ocean in this collection. It is unsentimental in its veneration of decay and destruction. Yet at the same time it aspires to a transcendent beauty.
