Over the years, the drawing process has guided my hand and thoughts, challenging me to translate inner narratives to outer reality. My past practice turned to creating visual art using the immediacy of drawing marks directly onto paper. This recent body of work is comprised of drawings made after looking back in time as part of self-reflection, pondering life and the people we encounter. This started with a review of old photographs and snapshots from my past I had taken. People I knew decades ago are a recurring subject in these photographs that trigger memory and initiate investigations into past youth and human psyche. My process of drawing runs the spectrum between conscious and intuitive, employing both traditional and innovative techniques in pencil, fine technical pens and inked brush, transforming black ink or graphite lines on paper into a graphic conversation. Intricate details manifest, where things build up from a simple base structure to reveal concepts like ordered complexity and emergence. Many opportunities arise to utilise various tonal harmonies and render surface textures thus creating intricacy, serendipity and grace, and ultimately influencing mood and movement in the finished product.

The considered inclusion of richly textured and patterned fabrics into the composition provides a stage presence and movement to the figures. It also symbolises the way people weave in and out of our lives. The mass of the fundamental figure is divergent with the light and shade on the folds and drapes. This pushes the figure to dwell behind the paper surface, eternally a complex puzzlement of persona and spirit. Yet the translation is often random, comparable to a conversation with a stranger, allowing a more personal observer and subject interaction When looking at an image we develop an individual connection that entices both personal experiences and reflected humanness.
The human form drawn on paper becomes a type of topography - one we have never visited before, but we recognise the nature of the terrain. All of us have memories from a past that form the foundation of who we are as individuals. These drawings are my way of exploring that fundamental aspect of the human condition: the quest to come closer to the understanding of self.
