Tobin Devasia – Melbourne Cityscapes

One of the profound learnings I have taken away from my personal journey through diverse cultures and experiences, is that everything can be described as an art-form – the way we understand ourselves and our role in society, the way we see and interact with others through various relationships, the way we express ourselves in the physical and subconscious worlds, the way we uphold our traditions and customs in order to maintain our identity.

The challenge is to have these artistic forms manifest itself into the more traditional forms of art, such as paintings, mosaics or craftworks. My vision is to express these art forms onto a canvas, through the use of colour, texture and shape – these representations will show-case the emotions, connections and interactions between the various actors and their environments, whether they are represented in a realistic or a surreal form.

The theme for this exhibition is focussed on bringing out the vibrancy and intimacy of the city of Melbourne. I have infused various painting styles into each of my paintings, and have used a modern and vibrant colour palette. The artworks highlight some of the iconic sites and locations that make Melbourne such a unique and eclectic city. The cityscape manages to balance itself by blending both classical and modern architectures, as well as intertwining natural environmental features such as parks, rivers and coastlines.
